“I wish I had taken more time to learn to be happy.” As a spiritual counselor I hear this statement regularly. As a matter of fact, this is one of the top five regrets of dying people. The good news is that you don’t have to be on your death bed to make a solid decision to be happy now.
Learning to be happy now – in the present moment – not only is a learnable skill, but it also has a tremendous impact on the body-mind.
“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.” ~ Earl Nightingale
The Health Benefits of Being Happy Now
For decades, research on the health benefits of positive emotions, such as being happy, has suggested that positive emotions may reduce the risk of heart disease, help slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, improve sleep, and even help you to keep off excess body weight.
In addition to the physical benefits of consistent positive emotions, an attitude of happiness has a positive impact on your emotional well-being. Studies have shown that genuinely happy people have fewer instances of divorce, are emotionally balanced, make more money, and that they actively engage in life more. The bottom line is that happy people live longer.
4 Easy Steps to Being Happy Now
Happiness is determined more by your thinking than your circumstance. That being said, if learning to be happy now is a learnable skill, then there is no excuse to start reprogramming yourself now to live a happier more empowered life.
Here are four easy steps to get you started, courtesy of the Happiness Institute:
- Make happiness a priority. If happiness is not at the top of your list then other things will take precedence. If other things take precedence, they may well interfere with your efforts to feel good.
- Make plans to be happy. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Just like in any other life domain, the successful pursuit of happiness requires planning.
- Set happy goals. Following on from step two, planning requires effective goal setting. And don’t forget to make sure your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timed).
- Do things that make you happy. Although this sounds obvious, many people simple forget to do things from which they gain pleasure. And do them as often as possible.
Be happy now. Make a commitment to yourself to put these four steps in practice in your daily experience and remember that your happiness is just a choice away!
